The Artist

Camila Castillo

Before words, there is feeling. That is where my art begins.

Camila in a white button-up shirt and a thin gold necklace, head tilted, half-smiling.

I make collage and mixed media art that expresses abstract emotions through a pop surrealist lens. I want to translate the emotions that resist language into images anyone can recognize — work that connects people across cultures through our main commonality: feeling. Each piece is built from recycled magazines and found materials, cut, layered and reassembled, because that is the human experience: fragments that only make sense once they are aligned. My process is intuitive and admittedly a little messy. I let the imperfect show, because sincerity is the point.

— Camila Castillo, The Global Collage

I’m Camila Castillo, a Venezuelan artist based in Miami. I came to visual art through a background in International Relations and intercultural communication, and that lens never left me. I think about how an image speaks across borders, not only how it looks. My influences are surrealism, a belief in everyday magic, and the artistic legacy of my grandfather, who taught me that making things is a way of thinking. Underneath all of it runs the value I care about most: global citizenship, the idea that empathy can cross any border, and that beauty built from many worlds can help us belong to each other.

A collage in progress on a spiral sketchbook: a woman in white on a rooftop with a small dog, a figure in a fur coat and cowboy hat below, magazine pages spread around it.
An open sketchbook with a bright abstract collage panel and cut-out words, The world is your oyster and Relax with art, beside black scissors and a glue stick.
Her table at night: a sketchbook holding a collage with the words This is Art, TAKE a harder look, among red scissors, a pink paint palette and open magazines.
